A raccoon that was reportedly acting strange in the area of the Mineral County Courthouse has tested positive for rabies, according to humane officer Melissa Kidwell. Kidwell said the Keyser Police Department had received several reports of the suspicious animal, but no one had been able to locate it until an employee of the courthouse saw it between the courthouse parking lot and Center Street and called Mineral County 911. Kidwell responded and was able to destroy the animal and send a specimen away for testing. “It was stumbling and blind in one eye,” she said, noting that the signs of the disease were unmistakable. This is the first animal that has tested positive for rabies this year in Mineral County. Kidwell noted that sighting animals such as raccoons, skunks and opossums in the city is not unusual; “it’s just how they’re acting” that people need to be aware of. The Mineral County Health Department, which sends the specimens away for testing, is urging everyone to “be cautious and stay away from animals acting strangely or aggressively.” The health department is also reminding all pet owners to make sure their dogs and cats are vaccinated against rabies. Mineral County is holding a spring rabies clinic on Saturday, April 11, from 9-11 a.m. in the parking lot at Tractor Supply, Keyser. Cost is $8 per animal, and pet owners are asked to bring the correct change. Dogs should be on a leash and cats should be contained. West Virginia State Law requires that all dogs and cats be vaccinated against rabies after 6 months of age.

The county’s third confirmed case of animal rabies this year was discovered today in a raccoon on South Tremont Drive. According to a news release from the Guilford County Department of Health and Human Services, the raccoon came into contact with a dog. All domestic pets in North Carolina aged four months and older are required by state law to be vaccinated. Guilford County Animal Control will offer a series of rabies vaccination clinics over the coming months. The cost of a shot is $5. They will take place the following dates and locations: April 15, 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., WGHP Fox 8 studio, 2005 Francis St., High Point. April 16, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., WGHP Fox 8 studio, 2005 Francis St., High Point.
